02Lineage and history

Albino at the front of the name records the pigment state of the selection. Saturn Tidepool is the line underneath it, and the catalogue does not publish a parent cross for it, so the documented history is the isolation itself.

Albino lines make up a large share of modern cubensis breeding, largely because an unpigmented parent lets a breeder track a cross visually: if the offspring stay white, the trait carried. 03Under the microscope

This is a contrast-technique specimen. Unpigmented spores are the same subellipsoid, thick-walled cubensis form with a germ pore, but they are effectively transparent. At 400x with the lamp turned up they disappear into the field. Turn the illumination down, close the condenser diaphragm partway, and the walls resolve as clean glassy outlines.

Confirm the albinism with a print: a pale grey or off-white deposit means the spores themselves carry no pigment, which is what the name is claiming. Then set it beside a pigmented card from this chapter, Green Toque or Hellmonkey, at the same objective. Two slides, one lesson.
