Blue Voodoo: the interspecies cross behind Blue Vootwo

01What Blue Voodoo is

Blue Voodoo is catalogued as Blue Voodoo (Blue Ravioli x Natal Moon), an isolated line credited to Q of What The Fungi in Australia, and listed under the species Ochra because of the parent on that side. It is currently between batches.

02Lineage and history

The parents are both documented:

• Blue Ravioli, an American cubensis line from the early 2020s named for its blue-toned, folded cap.
• Natal Moon, a cross of the Ochra species with Phobos, credited to Jeff Karas of The Fungus Frequency.

Because one parent is Psilocybe cubensis and the other carries Ochra, Blue Voodoo is an interspecies hybrid, which is unusual and is a large part of why the line is interesting. Q describes it as pairing two of the strongest lines he had, and notes that it throws several distinct phenotypes rather than one.

That last point is what makes the family worth following. Blue Vootwo is the A.C.S isolation that took one of those phenotypes and stabilised it. The wider tree, including Gamma Decay and Auric Stew, is mapped in Blue Ravioli and its crosses.

03Under the microscope

Ochra and cubensis spores sit close together in shape and size, so a hybrid between them is not obviously different under the objective: subellipsoid, thick-walled, germ pore, in the usual size band.

The print is where the Ochra side is likelier to show, running a shade lighter and browner than a straight cubensis deposit. And because the cross throws several phenotypes, expect a wider spore size range from Blue Voodoo than from Blue Vootwo, the isolate taken out of it. Those two cards on adjacent slides are the cleanest demonstration of what isolation does that the library offers.
