02Lineage and history

Ghost in a strain name conventionally points at a pale or washed-out expression, in the same family of words as White, Albino and Leucistic. It is a description of appearance rather than a genetic claim, and the hobby applies it loosely. Smokey in front of it suggests a greyed rather than a pure white phenotype, which would be characteristic of a leucistic line rather than a true albino one, though the card does not state that.

The library lists several other pale cards for comparison: Whitebilly, Albino Saturn Tidepool and the two Albino Bluey Vuitton lines. Four pale lines from one collection is a good set for learning how imprecise these words really are.

03Under the microscope

The print test applies here as it does to every pale line. A pale grey to off-white deposit means unpigmented spores. A normal purple-brown deposit from a pale mushroom means the pigment loss did not reach the spores, which is leucism.

On the slide, unpigmented spores are the same shape and size as pigmented ones, just transparent. Lower the illumination, close the condenser diaphragm partway, and the wall outline appears. Record the result against the strain and LOT, because this is exactly the sort of observation that makes a collection worth keeping.
