Tidal Wave, Enigma and the blob mutations: why a famous line has no spores of its own
Enigma is one of the most talked-about names in the hobby and one that a spore library has to be honest about, because a true Enigma produces no spores. This is the Tidal Wave line it came from, what a blob mutation is, and what the "Enigma" cards in the library actually contain.
01Tidal Wave
Tidal Wave is a Psilocybe cubensis cross of B+ and Penis Envy, generally credited to the breeder Doma of Magic Myco and released in the late 2010s. It combined the wavy, folded cap of its Penis Envy side with a more typical B+ form, and it became one of the most worked lines of the following decade. The library carries several Tidal Wave descendants, including Tidalwave 4 Big Boi, a What The Fungi isolation, and Royal Flush "Crown Jewelz" (TidalWave 4 x Dwarf King), a What The Fungi cross noted for its multicoloured wavy caps. Albino Trinity (Tidal Wave x Penis Envy x Aztec God) carries it into a three-way albino cross.
02What a blob mutation is
Within Tidal Wave a mutation appeared in which the fruiting body never forms a normal cap and gills. Instead it develops as a dense, folded, brain-like mass, informally a "blob". Because there are no gills there is no hymenium, and because there is no hymenium there are no spores. The mutation, named Enigma, cannot reproduce sexually at all. It has been maintained only as living tissue and passed between growers as such, which is a cultivation activity and outside anything this library supplies. The same blob phenotype has since appeared in other lines, and several are catalogued under the Enigma name.

03So what is in an "Enigma" spore syringe?
Not Enigma. A true blob makes no spores, so a syringe labelled Enigma is one of three things: spores from the Tidal Wave parent line, spores from a sporulating revert (a fruiting body from the mutant line that reverted to normal form and dropped spores), or a mislabel. Serious cards say which. The library's Shockwave Enigma is listed as a mutant isolation, and Poofball Enigma as an isolate from that family; both are supplied because they drop spores, which by definition means they are not the blob itself. Anyone selling "Enigma spores" without that explanation is selling a story.
04Why this matters for microscopy
It is a clean demonstration of what a spore actually is: the product of a hymenium. No gills, no spores, and no way for a spore library to carry the line. What can be studied are its relatives, and Tidal Wave family spores are typical pigmented cubensis, subellipsoid with a germ pore, giving a dense purple-brown print. Comparing a Tidal Wave isolate with a Penis Envy one shows the parent's low-spore trait diluted by the B+ side.
