YV2B (YAK Mutant): an unstable line, and why that is interesting

01What YV2B is

YV2B is catalogued as YV2B [YAK Mutant] and described on its listing as an unstable mutation. It is an isolated Psilocybe cubensis line in the A.C.S collection carried through Mushrealm. The library states the instability up front rather than burying it, which is the correct way to sell a line like this.

02Lineage and history

A mutant line is one where a change in form has been selected and kept. Unstable means it does not come true reliably: successive generations throw a mix of the mutant expression and something closer to normal. That is the opposite of what a breeder usually wants, and it is why most mutant lines never settle into a catalogue.

The library carries several others in the same spirit: Shockwave Enigma and Poofball Enigma from the blob-mutation family, and Indian Graveyard, catalogued as a spiral flower mutation. The most famous mutant of all, Enigma itself, cannot be sold as spores at all because the blob form has no gills and therefore no spore deposit. 03Under the microscope

Expect a pigmented cubensis spore population: subellipsoid, thick-walled, germ pore, purple-brown. The mutation is expressed in the fruiting body, not the spore, so YV2B will not look strange under the objective.

What may differ is the spread. Where a worked isolate gives a tight size range, an unstable line can give a wider one, and that is measurable. Take twenty spores against a calibrated graticule from YV2B and twenty from a settled isolate such as Lucid Gates, then compare the ranges. It is one of the few experiments in this chapter where you can predict the result in advance and still learn something from the numbers.
