APE and Penis Envy spores

The Penis Envy line and its albino expression, A.P.E., are among the most heavily worked genetics in Psilocybe cubensis. They are also the ones where provenance is hardest to verify, because the names have been reused, crossed and re-crossed for decades by dozens of separate breeders.

That is exactly why this collection is catalogued the way it is. Every APE and PE line here is listed with the cross that produced it where that cross is documented, and credited to the breeder who released it rather than rebranded. Where a line is a revert, meaning an albino expression that has returned toward the pigmented parent, it is labelled as one.

APE, PE and reverts

Penis Envy is the pigmented parent line. A.P.E. is the albino expression isolated from it. A revert is a line that has moved back toward pigmentation from an albino parent, which happens often enough that it gets its own designation in serious catalogues.

Under the microscope, albinism affects the pigment in the spore wall, so albino lines print far paler than the dark purple-brown of a standard cubensis. That is genuinely visible on a slide and on paper, and it is the one part of this distinction a microscopy library can speak to directly.
